As a culture, we certainly seem to have an addiction to danger, and that’s just one starting point for understanding why even the most loving or rational individuals are susceptible to falling prey to unhealthy relationships.

It can be hard to come home from the office at the end of the day jazzed up about filing and copying and dictating memos about mold damage. The flip side of that is the sort of “thrill” factor which we see littered throughout our fiction.

Think James Bond, Indiana Jones, Jack Sparrow—secret agents and spies and pirates, oh my!  All dangerous roles, all consequence-free, and all glamorized in part because of that danger.

It’s important to note that the adrenaline factor is just one contributing factor and one way in which unhealthy relationships can arise.

Many if not most such relationships are anything but glamorous and exciting, and are instead wrought with everything from heartbreak and fear to abuse and nightmarish addictions of a different kind.
