Interracial couples – Multiculturalism. It’s a big word, and today’s globalized economy and evermore diversified society, an even bigger idea.
The number of and intercultural and interracial couples and marriages has skyrocketed since the 1960s.
We have an image if the West in general and the US and Canada in particular as being primarily white, male, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant, as that was the dominant culture and considered the ‘norm’ right through the end of the 1960s.
The last 50+ years, however, have seen a slow but steady challenging of the status quo, with everything from the Jewish revivalists and Civil Rights and Black Power movements to the Latino, Feminist and LGBT Revolutions of the 1970s to modern immigration patterns we see today from Latin America, Asia, India, the Middle East, and beyond.
So suffice it to say that, while we still have a long way to go, the world is a lot more diverse today than they used to be.
