He continued to work hard and went through his high school, filled with dreams about his future. Ben also won a scholarship to the prestigious Yale University and he completed his medical schooling in the University of Michigan.
Later, he was appointed as the head of a big division at Johns Hopkins and Dr. Ben Carson actually became the youngest physician to ever do so.
As of now, Dr. Ben Carson focuses on brain injuries that cause a lot of trauma and tumors in the spinal cord and brain. In addition, he also treats congenital and neurological disorders.
Back in 1987, Ben was the head of about 69 professionals and led the team to separate the heads of conjoined twins. The twins were attached at the very back of their heads and Ben Carson and his team operated them successfully.

Who would have thought that a boy who suffered as a kid would treat traumatic brain injuries when he grew up? Surely, it was his determination and thirst for knowledge, along with his mother’s dedicated effort that helped him attain success.
Dr. Ben Carson continues with his various methods in the medical field to help people. His methods are revolutionary and techniques like hemispherectomies involves removing half the brain in order to treat disorders caused by seizures.
Dr. Ben Carson performs this surgery on many people who are suffering from such disorders. However, it must be noted that this delicate procedure is performed usually on children and Ben has studied the technique to perfect it and refine it over the years.
In fact, he has modified it well and has created various approaches to gain a better rate of success on these operations. Dr. Ben Carson believes that encouraging other people to succeed in their lives is vital. He says, ‘Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles, but by your reaction to them.
And if you look at these obstacles as a containing fence, they become your excuse for failure. If you look at them as a hurdle, each one strengthens you for the next.’
Dr. Ben Carson was named as one among the country’s top 20 most famous scientists and physicians by Time magazine and CNN in 2001. Again in 2001, he was selected as one among 89 ‘Living Legends’. The NAACP bestowed the highest honor – the Spingarn medal on Ben in 2006.
George Bush awarded Dr. Ben Carson with the Ford’s Theater Lincoln Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2009, his life story was released as a movie known as Gifted Hands based on his book Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story.
We have to understand that life throws all sorts of challenges on us. We have two ways to deal with them. Either we lose control and let our problems overtake us or we face those challenges head on.
